[1] This horos apparently marked property belonging to the demesmen of Piraeus. For a long time [χώρ]ας was restored, “of the territory of the Piraeans”, and interpreted as evidence that demes had defined territories in the 4th century BC (for the inscription in that context cf. G. Lalonde, Hesperia 75, 2006, 95 n. 40), but Lambert ap. SEG 47.193 noted the possibility, [ἀγορ]ᾶς, “of the agora of the Piraeans”. In ZPE 146, 2004, 91-92 (ph.) = SEG 54.240, however, he rejected that restoration as “probably too long” and proposed [οἰκί]ας, “of the house of the Piraeans”, while also ruling out γ̣ᾶς, “of the land of the Piraeans”, suggested by N. F. Jones, The Associations of Classical Athens (1999), 59 = SEG 49.175 (not an Attic prose form). See also P. Gauthier, Bull. ép. 2005, no. 203 (somewhat sceptical). We must conclude that it is uncertain what type of property this horos marked. The orthography (Ionic alphabet, no aspirate) and letter forms indicate a date after ca. 400 BC, probably 400-300 BC. The spelling Πειραέων for Πειραιέων is rare after ca. 300 BC (cf. Threatte I, 282-84). On the deme Piraeus and its inscriptions see IG II² 1176.
